From August 1 to October 31, 2020, PSGR implemented a project titled “Advocacy on Child Labour Issues Under COVID-19 Towards Achieving SDG Target 8.7 in Malawi”. This was an advocacy project conducted with the aim of engaging and advocating political leadership to prioritise child labour in COVID-19 response towards realization of target 8.7 of SDGs as part of Pathfinder strategy and other national plans.
The project consisted of several activities such as consultations with CSOs and government agencies for identifying issues related to child labour in the region and forging future collaborations, production of IEC material, meeting with the Salima District Assembly and meetings with sugar association and companies etc. During this three month long period, 68 children were rescued and rehabilitated from exploitative conditions with support from NGOs and government child protection authorities.
The project harboured many achievements such as enhanced CSO collaboration, inclusion of child labour in COVID-19 response budget (national & district levels) and successful lobbying of PSGR into the National Technical Working Group on Child Labour in Malawi.
