On November 11, 2020, Swatantrata Abhiyan Nepal organised a virtual meeting with 20 local government leaders of Kathmandu in coordination with Kathmandu District Coordination Committee (DCC). Mr. Sujan Jojiju, Under Secretary of Ministry of Labour Employment and Social Security, oriented local leaders on child labour, child rights and protection, impact of COVID-19 on children and Nepal’s policies and international commitments against child labour. The local leaders then shared updates related to children and COVID-19 from their respective municipalities.
Further during the meeting indicators of the ‘Child Labour Free’ Local Level Act 2077 were discussed. Additionally, activities carried out to reduce child labour like policy work, awareness campaigns, and implication of the said activities were discussed.
It was decided that as a way forward municipalities will work in collaboration with different organisations who will help them rehabilitate rescued children and also, collect data on child labour. SAN is now preparing to conduct a similar orientation workshop with the Lalitpur DCC and has submitted a concept note and a draft schedule with them.
