National Consultation on Implementation of ILO C.182 Organised in Bangladesh

Bangladesh Shishu Adhikar Forum (BSAF), with the support of Terre des hommes Netherlands (TdH-NL) and Global Against Child Labour organiSed a National Consultation titled “Implementation of ILO C182: Opportunities and Challenges” on 26 September 2019. The Consultation was attended by Mr. Md. Fazle  Rabbi Miah, MP, Honorable Deputy Speaker  of the National Parliament of Bangladesh; Mr. Md. Shamsul Haque Tuku, MP, Chairman of Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights; Mr. Tuomo Poutiainen, Country Director, ILO Country Office for Bangladesh; Mr. Mahmudul Kabir, Country Director, Terre des Hommes Netherlands, apart from officials from Ministry of Labour and Employment, INGOs and NGOs, Trade Union bodies and Employers Federation.

Mr. Md. Fazle Rabbi Miah highlighted the need to improve economic condition of children’s families, improve inter-ministry coordination, identify priorities and prepare plan of action accordingly along with its monitoring plan. Mr. Md. Shamsul Haque Tuku said that government cannot eliminate child labour alone, and invited CSOs, media to support in this endeavour. Mr. Tuomo Poutiainen requested the government to utilise the Local Administration for withdrawal of children from hazardous work and urged to accumulate data on child domestic work in the next national survey of child labour in Bangladesh. Mr Mahmudul Kabir suggested promotion of vocational training for children. Mr. A K M Masud Ali encouraged the government to monitor the small and informal factories where a large number of children are engaged. Lastly, Mr. Abdus Shahid Mahmood asked for the government to expedite the progress of the project amounting to BDT 284 core for the elimination of hazardous child labour and placed his aspiration for formation of separate Parliamentary Caucus on Child Labour.
